The Houston Independent School District will welcome performers from the Beijing Normal University Art Troupe to the city on Thursday to honor Chinese language and culture as part of the district’s Confucius World Day celebration.

More than 400 HISD students enrolled in Chinese language classes in K-12 campuses across the district will experience traditional Chinese art forms, including dance, folk music, calligraphy, and Kung Fu, and will be served a traditional Chinese meal.

The art troupe composed of 20 college dancers will visit HISD as part of its 10-city southwest tour of the U.S in celebration of Chinese culture and in memory of ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius. The group also will perform this week at the Mandarin Immersion Magnet School.

The program was organized by the district’s Confucius Institute and Office of Advanced Academics. The HISD Confucius Institute was founded in 2013, and as a member of the world-wide organization, its mission is to promote Chinese language and culture through partnerships, exchange programs and instruction.
