A VERY PROUD MOMENT FOR ISIAH FACTOR!

EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE ON TAMINA COVID 19 TESTING:
Getting the site in Tamina took a few steps. First, Isiah Carey with Fox 26 News, was reporting in the area and discovered that there hadn’t been accessible testing done in the area. He reached out to the offices of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who is not the congressional representative for Tamina, who then coordinated with the Texas Division of Emergency Management to get the testing sites set up. Congressman Kevin Brady’s office also helped bring attention to the need for testing in the area to the Texas Department of Emergency Management and local officials.

ADRIAN’S FAMILY WANTS ANSWERS!

NOTE: ADRIAN’S FAMILY IS VERY UPSET SAYING THEY WANT ANSWERS AND THEY DEMAND TO KNOW WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO HIM. FRIENDS ON SOCIAL MEDIA DESCRIBED HIM AS A DEVOUT CHRISTIAN AND THE ALLEGATIONS FROM THE HOUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT JUST DON’T FIT HIS CHARACTER. THE FOLLOWING IS THE PRESS RELEASE FROM HPD:

Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a suspect by an HPD officer at 11710 North Freeway (North Interstate Highway 45) service road about 1:30 a.m. today (May 8).

The deceased male is identified as Adrian Dewand Medearis, 48.

Officer J. Ramos, who discharged his duty weapon in the incident, was not injured.  Officer Ramos is assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Division and was sworn in as an officer in May of 2013.

HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant R. Bass and Officers M. Millington, L. Lopez, S. Martinez and J. Hartnett reported:

Officer Ramos, of the DWI Task Force, conducted a traffic stop of a black BMW at the above address.  The officer made contact with the driver (later identified as Medearis) and conducted a DWI investigation.  When Officer Ramos attempted to place Medearis under arrest, a physical altercation ensued.  During the confrontation, Medearis was able to gain possession of Officer Ramos’ Conducted Energy Device (Taser) and pointed it at him.  Officer Ramos drew his duty weapon, in fear of serious bodily injury or death, and fired multiple times, striking Medearis.

Medearis was provided first aid at the scene and then transported by ambulance to HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.

As is customary when an officer discharges a weapon in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

THEY HAVE BEEN ARRESTED!

Georgia police on Thursday arrested a white father and son and charged them with murder in the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black man whose death in February had recently attracted widespread outrage.

Much of that anger has been focused on the fact that no charges had been brought against the father and son, Gregory and Travis McMichael, ages 64 and 34.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that both men had been taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault in addition to murder. Travis McMichael fired the shot that killed Mr. Arbery, the state police agency said in a statement.

THE MCMICHAELS

In recent days, details surrounding the circumstances of Mr. Arbery’s death on Feb. 23 — and the fact that no one had been arrested — prompted a wave of outrage and concern from figures as diverse as former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., the basketball star LeBron James and Russell Moore, a prominent leader of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Those sentiments surged on Tuesday with the release of a graphic video that showed a black man, apparently Mr. Arbery, running toward a truck, engaging in a struggle with a man holding a shotgun, and then falling to the ground after three shotgun blasts went off.

The Georgia authorities, in a news release, stated that it was Travis McMichael who shot and killed Mr. Arbery.

Mayor Turner announces citywide celebration for 2020 high school seniors!

Today, Mayor Sylvester Turner joined with several area school superintendents to announce a special ‘first-of-its-kind’ outdoor celebration for high school seniors on Thursday, June 4.

Houston Celebrates H.S. Seniors 2020 will take place at each of the school districts’ high schools and will feature special guests, celebrity appearances, and other surprise moments. The mayor and superintendents will work together to create a collective, but personal celebration that salutes the achievement of all graduates and reflects the unity of the city.

Seniors are invited to assemble at their schools, wear their caps, gowns, and facial coverings while adhering to social distancing. Parents, family members, and friends are invited to participate virtually.

Because the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to shut down and shift to online learning, many school districts have struggled with how to celebrate the Class of 2020.

“This unique class of scholars has persevered through one of the most challenging times in recent history with remarkable resilience,” Mayor Turner said. “The students have earned their title: graduating senior. It is appropriate for the city of Houston to celebrate and honor their achievement in a way that reflects the commonality of this moment and unites our city.”

The citywide celebration will take place irrespective of how individual school districts may choose to honor their graduating seniors. The event will include graduates from the Houston, Aldine, Alief, Spring Branch, and Spring Independent School Districts.

The Houston Municipal Channel (HTV), HISD TV – available on Comcast Ch. 18 and AT&T U-verse Ch. 99 – and local television stations will broadcast the celebration. The event also will be streamed on multiple social media platforms.

The ceremony is not a commencement, and no diplomas will be issued to students. Mayor Turner and the superintendents will announce additional information at a later date.

D.A. KIM OGG SAYS SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESSES AND SHE’LL TAKE CARE OF THE CRIMINALS!

We all are aware of the impact COVID-19 has had on small businesses. Business owners are carrying the weight of monthly bills, payroll, and taxes while their businesses have been shuttered and their income shattered.  Some have even been victims of crime.

As the top law enforcement official in Harris County, be advised that prosecutors and police are working 24/7 to identify, capture and prosecute criminals who have taken advantage of the crisis to further harm business owners and customers.

As we work from home, everyone can help by patronizing local businesses. When you need something, I am urging you to purchase it locally from a small business or a company that is Harris County or Texas-based.

Some ways we can help our small local businesses are:

  1. Buying gift cards from SPAs, cleaning services, restaurants, clothing stores as gifts or for personal use later.
  2. Check favorite local restaurants’ websites for take-out or special ingredient packages for special occasions now being celebrated at home.
  3. If you can, keep paying for on-going services like housekeepers, pet care, personal trainers, gyms, nail or hair salons who will likely be willing to return the support once re-opened.

As a part of my campaign, we will periodically let you know about local vendors who are (partially) open for business.  This is not intended as an endorsement, just our way of trying to help the great people of our local economic engine.

Best Regards,

DA Kim Ogg
