Harris County Sheriff’s Office Confirmed COVID-19 Cases Stand at 113!

The number of Harris County Sheriff’s Office employees diagnosed with coronavirus has reached 113, with 98 of the positive test results being among those who work in the jail.

There are currently 297 Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies, detention officers and support staff on quarantine for possible COVID-19 exposure. Five of these employees are currently in the hospital. As of Thursday, 137 previously quarantined employees – including 11 who previously tested positive for the virus — have returned to duty. Sixty-four Sheriff’s Office employees are still awaiting test results. Forty-three employees have received negative test results.

The Sheriff’s Office is working with Harris County Public Health to identify co-workers, inmates, and members of the public who may have had close contact with the diagnosed employees so they can take necessary precautions, including quarantine and testing for those wi th symptoms.

As of Thursday, 68 inmates in the Harris County Jail have tested positive for COVID-19. An additional 47 inmates are in quarantine with symptoms indicative of the virus and are awaiting test results. Both of these figures are unchanged since Wednesday.

All jail employees have been issued protective masks and are instructed to wear them while on duty. All inmates have also been issued masks. Regular temperature checks are performed daily on all employees as they report for duty. Other measures taken in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 among Sheriff’s Office staff and inmates include:

• Early isolation of arrestees with COVID-19 symptoms entering the jail at intake
• Masking all arrestees at the Joint Processing Center jail intake
• 7-day “buffer isolation” of all new inmates prior to releasing to general population
• Social distancing of inmates (as much as possible), detention staff, and medical staff, even in break rooms
• Increased availability of soap, water, and hand sanitizer
• Increased frequency of facility sanitization efforts
• Increased cleaning supplies provided for inmate use
• Inmate education at the Joint Processing Center screening on mask wearing, social distancing, and frequent hand washing
• Suspended fees for inmate sick call requests
• Aggressive quarantining of a tank when an inmate is moved to isolation for COVID 19 symptoms
• Daily temperature screenings of worker inmates prior to leaving their tanks
• Examining ways to reduce inmate movement
• Replacing live meetings to conference calls
• Holding court hearings via video
• Implementing video inmate visitation
• Temperature screening all inmates released from jail
• Homeless scree ning all inmates leaving jail for hotel or shelter placement
• Screening homeless inmates with COVID-19 symptoms and placing them COVID-19 hotels
• Advising all inmates to go home and self-quarantine for 14 days after they leave jail
• All inmates are wearing masks upon jail discharge and have COVID-19 discharge instructions and resources

Senator Borris Miles Letter to the Governor: We Must Have More Testing Before State Reopens!

Today I wrote the Governor that he should not consider reopening the state until widespread testing is done in African American neighborhoods. Testing sites have been located in hard to reach areas away from communities of color like Northeast and Southeast Houston. There is a data gap, and our neighborhoods will suffer if the state reopens while African American neighborhoods are still battling COVID-19.

WHO WILL GET TO VOTE BY MAIL BECAUSE OF COVID 19!

AUSTIN – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton gave this statement following today’s bench ruling by the Travis County District Court to expand mail-in ballot voting in Travis County for upcoming Texas elections:

“I am disappointed that the district court ignored the plain text of the Texas Election Code to allow perfectly healthy voters to take advantage of special protections made available to Texans with actual illness or disabilities. This unlawful expansion of mail-in voting will only serve to undermine the security and integrity of our elections and to facilitate fraud. Mail ballots based on disability are specifically reserved for those who are legitimately ill and cannot vote in-person without needing assistance or jeopardizing their health. Fear of contracting COVID-19 does not amount to a sickness or physical condition as required by state law. My office will continue to defend Texas’s election laws to ensure that our elections are fair and our democratic process is lawfully maintained.”

Federal Judge Rejects Release of Harris County Inmates!

Federal Judge Lee Rosenthal has rejected a petition for the emergency release of up to as many as 4,000 inmates from the Harris County Jail. This is in line with the Amicus Brief (read more: https://bit.ly/3be7R6q) filed by Senator Bettencourt and Representatives Harless, Paul, Huberty, Swanson, Cain, Bohac, Murphy, and Oliverson, in the case of Russell vs. Harris County to “object to the wholesale release of individuals accused of felony offenses from the Harris County Jail.”  Citing a burden of concerns of the “mass release of individuals accused of felony offenses currently housed in the Harris County Jail” this group of Harris County legislators called for the dismissal of the current lawsuit.

Ordering mass inmate release has been tried three times now.  First, Judge Hidalgo’s overreaching order was stopped. Next, Sheriff Gonzalez and sixteen Harris County misdemeanor judges sued in Travis County but were blocked by the Texas Supreme Court, and now a Federal Court has said no again on an existing federal suit,” said Senator Bettencourt.  “This is a victory for the citizens. How many times do these elected officials have to hear ‘NO’ on a mass release of inmates from the jail!?”

Judge Rosenthal wrote clearly in her ruling denying the plaintiffs request TRO to release 4,000 inmates from the Harris County jail: A federal district court asked to wade into policy and political disagreements among State and County elected officials is in risky territory. There is no good, clearly safe, constitutionally, and jurisdictionally right solution to many of the short-term problems and disagreements the pandemic has made so acute.”

State Representative Dennis Paul added, “We are glad to see that a ruling was made to keep the citizens of Harris County safe as we get through this COVID-19 crisis.”  Representative Dan Huberty agreed, adding that her ruling, “…also includes protection from repeat and violent criminals for county citizens.”

The 9 Texas Legislator interveners represent approximately 2 million plus constituents in Harris County which include law enforcement officers, medical workers, veterans, small business owners, parents now educating their children at home, crime victims, and many others who are navigating the difficult circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 panic. There is documented strong opposition to these proposed inmate releases all throughout Harris County.

“Common sense prevails!” concluded Representative Sam Harless.

If you put it on the internet then some damn fool will absolutely believe it with no questions asked.

That’s the case with the latest conspiracy theory and how the new 5G cellular service is causing the Coronavirus.

Derick Boze, an investigative reporter, has been no fan of 5G and has probed it for years.

However, the journalist and filmmaker says even he doesn’t believe 5G is responsible for Covid 19.

Boze says claims like that will only harm the true dangers of 5G!
